NSW Ports helping seafarers from across the globe

The Mission to Seafarers operates in approximately 300 ports around the world and 23 ports in Australia. The Mission to Seafarers provides facilities to allow seafarers to keep in contact with family back home, support services including counselling, postal services and leisure facilities, as well as local information for seafarers from countries all around the world. The Mission to Seafarers at Port Kembla is operated by 25-30 volunteers who staff the facility seven nights per week.

The Mission’s work is an invaluable resource for the thousands of seafarers that visit the port each year. NSW Ports is a proud supporter.

On 2nd November NSW Ports CEO Marika Calfas visited the Mission facility in Port Kembla to witness first-hand the important work they are doing and meet some of the volunteers who assist with the operation of the facility.

Marika Calfas said, “I am pleased to announce our continued support of this important charitable organisation. The port services hundreds of vessels each year and we welcome thousands of seafarers to our shores. Many of these seafarers will have spent months at sea and the Mission to Seafarers provides a safe and comfortable environment for them.”

Lay Chaplain John Kewa said, “The support of the local port community is vital to providing the services to the seafarers visiting our shores.” The Mission to Seafarers is funded entirely by donations to finance the huge responsibility of offering care to some of the most important (yet invisible) people who make considerable sacrifice to keep the global economy afloat.”
