NSW Ports is proud to have sponsored this year’s annual National Infrastructure Awards and Oration, by Infrastructure Partnerships Australia, which celebrate achievements in delivering major projects across the country.

NSW Ports CEO and Infrastructure Partnerships Australia (IPA) Deputy Chair Marika Calfas said this year’s oration by Chair of the Australian Energy Market Commission and Energy Security Board, Anna Collyer, highlighted the essential role of infrastructure in the nation’s clean energy transformation.

“The transition to renewable energy generation presents significant challenges but also tremendous opportunities. It’s fitting that this year’s address was delivered by a leader in the energy sector, who has worked extensively on industry reforms,” she said.

Ms Calfas said NSW Ports is supporting the shift to clean energy across its assets, which includes plans for a large-scale offshore wind port facility in Port Kembla’s Outer Harbour.

“Port Kembla is close to Greater Sydney’s growing population and surrounded by industrial lands. It is within the NSW Government’s Illawarra Renewable Energy Zone and adjacent to the Federal Government’s proposed Illawarra offshore wind development zone,” she said.

“NSW Ports’ proposed Outer Harbour offshore wind port facility provides an opportunity for significant job creation, domestic innovation and carbon emissions reduction.

“However, delivering such major infrastructure requires substantial and ongoing collaboration between Government, private enterprise, industry and the community.”

Ms Calfas said the National Infrastructure Awards brought together the public and private sectors to recognise major achievements and explore future infrastructure opportunities, including the transition towards decarbonisation.

“NSW Ports is continuing to collaborate with government, renewable energy proponents, manufacturers as well as business and industry groups to support the transition to renewable energy generation,” she said.

“Port Kembla already handles renewable energy components to support onshore wind farms and solar power and is expected to support offshore wind development, hydrogen and critical minerals exports in the longer term.”

Port Kembla is a key infrastructure asset and economic driver for NSW and the nation – contributing $2.9 billion a year to the State’s economy and supporting about 10,000 jobs.
