A record-breaking visit at Port Botany

A new record container exchange has been set at Port Botany for the number of containers discharged and loaded on one vessel.

The vessel OOCL Brazil performed the largest container exchange ever recorded at Port Botany, with an incredible 10,746 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (or TEU, which is the standard measurement of a container) exchanged at the DP World terminal.

This surpasses the previous record of 9,487 TEU, set in 2020 by the OOCL Seamax Stratford at DP World.

The OOCL Brazil operates on the A3 Central Express (A3C) service connecting the east coast of Australia with major ports in central China and Taiwan.

The record exchange reflects not only the growing scale of global shipping but also the capability of Port Botany and its terminal operators to handle increasingly complex and high-volume operations. The seamless coordination between the vessel, terminal operations, and landside logistics was instrumental in achieving this milestone.

NSW Ports CEO Marika Calfas acknowledged the significance of the exchange.

“The record exchange of 10,746 TEU from OOCL Brazil at DP World demonstrates the capability of Port Botany to accommodate these larger exchanges. We congratulate OOCL and DP World on this latest achievement.”

Executive Vice President of DP World Oceania, Nicolaj Noes said the milestone underscores both the volume of trade moving through the port and the need for ongoing investment in its long-term capacity

“With the right infrastructure and technology investments, including the Sydney rail interchange program we are delivering in partnership with NSW Ports and critical technology upgrades at the terminal, we have a significant opportunity to unlock additional capacity at Port Botany, improve freight efficiency, supply chain resilience and support the growth of a 24/7 trade economy for NSW,” he said.

While regional operations manager for OOCL (Australia) Matthew Mealing, commended all those involved for their contribution to the record-breaking milestone.

“I would like to congratulate all teams involved in the record-breaking OOCL Brazil 055S exchange at Port Botany.

“This achievement reflects the outstanding execution of the OOCL operations team, delivering a well-planned repositioning program to support the increased volume.

“Overall, this milestone highlights the strength of collaboration across all stakeholders and reinforces OOCL’s capability to consistently deliver high-volume, high-performance port operations.”
