Junior cricketers in south-east Sydney will start every innings on the right foot thanks to a new training pitch and nets funded by NSW Ports.

South Sydney Mount Carmel Junior Cricket Club received a $20,000 NSW Ports Community Grant for upgrades to cricket facilities at Booralee Park, in Botany, for training and matches.

NSW Ports Chief Financial Officer Andrew Lincoln said the business was pleased to give young cricketers a great shot at success.

“The cricket club was one of 17 grants awarded through the 2022 Community Grants Program that supported a range of positive grassroots initiatives in the local neighbourhoods surrounding our ports and intermodal terminals,” he said.

“NSW Ports is an active member of the communities within which we operate, with Port Botany playing a vital role through industry and trade and supporting thousands of jobs, so we’re delighted to be able to give back and support local groups through grants and sponsorships."

“Community sport is about much more than health benefits – it also encourages terrific social benefits by helping players and their families make new friends and connect with people in their local area who share a love of cricket.”

Roland Stephens from South Sydney Mount Carmel Junior Cricket Club said the enhanced facilities would encourage more aspiring cricketers to take up the sport.

“Our club is really focussed on providing a fun, positive experience for cricket-loving children and their families to get active, learn a celebrated Aussie sport and the values of respect and good sportsmanship, while building new social connections in their neighbourhoods,” he said.

“With these cracking new facilities now installed at Booralee Park, we hope to attract even more junior players to our ranks for the upcoming season, as community sport is something that everyone should be able to enjoy."

“We thank NSW Ports for their community grant, which has allowed us to significantly enhance our local grounds and improved the amenity of the park, not just for our players, but for other regular users of these facilities as well.”
